Admittedly, I have been doing way too much lately. It’s like I just can’t stop and I know that it is costing me. Unfortunately, what I’ve found is that no matter how much I do, there is always more stuff to be done.
On Monday, my wife informed me that she was going to get a babysitter for our son and we were going to do nothing, just relax. My first response was hesitation, because I knew the grass needed mowed and there was quite a bit of stuff to do around the house. But, I took her up on the offer and we spent three completely unstructured hours just relaxing.
After work, we dropped our son off at Grandma and Grandpa’s. Then we took a quick trip to grab Dairy Queen Blizzards and a movie. We decided on Despicable Me as I was in the mood for something lighthearted. She had already prepared supper, so it was ready when we got home. I don’t think I left the couch from the time we got home until we left to pick up our boy.
You know what I learned from this little experience? A lot. The past two days have been my most productive days in weeks. I’ve accomplished way more than I normally do. It isn’t because I feel that I’m behind now and I need to catch up. It’s because I feel refreshed. I feel better than I have in weeks, possibly even months.
There are many of you reading this who absolutely will not believe me that the secret to getting more done is to just do nothing once in a while (I’m not advocating that you do nothing all the time). You will continue to run in the hamster wheel of busyness and feel like you are not accomplishing anything. I’ve been there. I’ve ignored the advice as well. I now regret that decision.
Thank you Megan for the wonderful evening together and for helping me accomplish so much this week by doing nothing.
And in case anybody is wondering, I really did enjoy the movie. It was pretty family friendly, had a lot of humor, and told a good story.
