SHARPEN is a 3-month, intensive, peer mentoring group starting this July. The goal of SHARPEN is to develop ministry leaders serving in small churches to maximize their impact, strengthen their abilities, and develop themselves as leaders in both the church setting and at home. The name SHARPEN comes from two different inspirations. First, Proverbs 27:17 tells us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Secondly, the 7th habit of highly effective people as listed by Stephen Covey is to sharpen the saw, namely, to develop one’s greatest tool, himself or herself.
It is for the purpose of developing oneself that I have developed SHARPEN and will be taking applications for the first class. For class one, I’ve made some pretty tight restrictions in church size and I am only opening it to men at this time. However, if the project is deemed a success, future classes will be opened up to a wider range of leaders. As an added benefit to class one, there is no monetary cost to participate.
